Biological Sciences, BS, Concentration: Biology Teaching

About the Program


The Biology Teaching concentration is intended for students who are interested in becoming high school biology teachers. It is a comprehensive program that ensures that the student has a solid understanding of the entire field of Biology as well as an extensive knowledge of teaching modern methods.

Degree Requirements


  • 120 Credit Hours
  • Minimum grade of C required for all BIOL courses
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0 required for graduation
  • Students must pass the state content test in Biology and the pedagogy test

PNW General Education Core (30 Credits)


Biological Sciences Electives (8-9 Credits)


Choose one course from GROUP A (Ecology and Evolution) and one from GROUP B (Molecular, Cellular). If needed, a third course can be chosen from either group.

Minimum Grade and Grade Point Average (GPA):  Minimum grade of C required for all BIOL courses (unless otherwise noted); 2.0 GPA

Experiential Learning (EL):  One EL course required.  EL courses are noted by (e) next to the course title.

Milestone Courses noted by (m) next to the course title have been identified as being critical to your success in this field of study. 

Courses that are only offered on one campus will be noted by an (H) for Hammond, or (W) for Westville.

Note 1: Additional GPA Requirements for BS Biology Degree: Minimum 2.0 GPA for all biology core and biology required courses.

Note 2: Minimum grade of C- required.

Note 3: Students need to take the Indiana content test in Biology for secondary educator licensure.

Note 4: Minimum grade of B- required.

Note 5: Students need to take the pedagogy area assessment test for secondary education licensure.

Note 6: Students must obtain a grade of P (pass)
