CHM 26605 - Organic Chemistry II Prerequisite(s): CHM 26505 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C-
Credit Hours: 3.00. A continuation of CHM 26505, but a broader scope. The chemistry of a variety of functional groups is discussed. Theory is employed extensively to demonstrate the coherence underlying seemingly diverse transformations. Qualitative organic analysis is introduced, with particular emphasis on spectroscopic methods. Typically offered Spring. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Learn to recognize recurring themes and patterns of reactivity of functional groups.
2. Develop an understanding of organic structure-property relationships.
3. Use spectrometric and spectroscopic techniques to determine the structures of organic molecules.
4. Apply an understanding of reaction mechanisms to new transformations of organic molecules.
5. Recognize different classes of biomacromolecules, lipids, and synthetic polymers.
6. Recognize the role that organic chemistry plays as an enabling science in pharmaceutical, agricultural, electronic/photonic materials and commodity chemical industries.
