Prerequisite(s): CHM 11100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR HCHM FOR MIN. SCORE OF 2.0

Credit Hours: 3.00.  An introduction to the principles of chemistry and the fundamentals of organic chemistry and biochemistry. Topics covered include atomic and molecular structure, states of matter, acid/base chemistry, solutions, nomenclature, structure, and reactions of organic compounds and biochemicals, including carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. Intended primarily for students in the Nursing and Integrative Human Health programs but may be taken with the consent of the instructor. Not to serve as a prerequisite for higher-numbered chemistry course.
General Education: Natural Sciences
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Nomenclature rules, structure and formulae of ionic and covalent compounds. 2. Ionic, covalent and metallic bonds. 3. Intermolecular forces and their effect on physical properties. 4. Writing, balancing and using chemical equations in stoichiometric calculations. 5. Reaction kinetics and equilibrium. 6. Solutions: concentration units, solubility, and colligative properties. 7. Properties of acids, bases and buffers: pH and titration. 8. Nomenclature rules, structure, formulae and reactions of selected organic functional groups. 9. Structure, properties and biological roles of selected classes of biochemicals (lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids). 10. Safety rules for the chemistry laboratory and procedures for safe dispensing, handling and disposal of chemicals.
