IHH 20000 - Medical Terminology


Prerequisite(s): (SCI 10500 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C OR BIOL 10100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C OR BIOL 21300 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C )

AND

(ENGL 10400 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C OR HONR 11000 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C)

Credit Hours: 3.00.  An introductory course which provides an overview of the terminology, including roots, prefixes, and suffixes, used in the medical/health professions fields. The various systems in the body are examined, such as the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, and the nervous systems, and the various parts in each system are identified. In addition, terminology as it relates to various symptoms, ailments, and medical procedures is studied. The emphasis will be placed upon pronunciation and spelling of the various terms rather than upon an understanding of the operation of the various systems.
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Develop a familiarity and comfort with using common medical terms. 2. Spell, pronounce, define, and identify words and word parts. 3. Use medical terms and abbreviations correctly in written work. 4. Understand readings that use medical terms and abbreviations. 5. Provide the complete meaning of a medical abbreviation. 6. Reinforce knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology. 7. Correctly construct singular and plural forms of terms. 8. Construct medical terms, given a definition.
