SOC 35000 - Sociology Of Family


Prerequisite(s): SOC 10000 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D-

Credit Hours: 3.00. Designed to provide an understanding of contemporary courtship, marriage, and family interaction as cultural, social, and social-psychological phenomena. Consideration of the major sources of marital strain and conflict within a heterogeneous, rapidly changing society. Not open to students who have CDFS35000 or WOST35000. Typically offered Summer Fall Spring.
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Identify trends in the demography of marriage and family.
2. Identify factors that impact the quality and stability of family relationships.
3. Understand the ways in which patterns of marriage, cohabitation, parenthood, and employment combine to affect well-being in adulthood.
4. Describe why sociologists define the family as a social institution.
5. Apply sociological theories to explain trends in family formation and dissolution.
6. Understand patterns of social inequalities in families.
