Holistic Health and Wellness Minor

Program Philosophical Beliefs:

The Faculty articulate a philosophy for the Holistic Health and Wellness program that is congruent with the Nursing Department’s mission and philosophy, and with the mission statement of Purdue University Northwest that defines their beliefs regarding the concepts of person, environment and health along with the central concepts of holistic health and wellness: holism, wellness, healing and health promotion.

  • Person, which includes individuals, families and communities, is a uniquely holistic body-mind-spirit. Each person chooses and participates in health decisions.
  • Environment is an ever changing unity of systems and processes in which a person lives.
  • Health is the harmony of the mind-body-spirit. it is the living of optimal well being and quality of life.
  • Holism is the interrelationship of body, mind and spirit in an ever-changing environment.
  • Wellness is intergrated functioning aimed towards reaching a person’s highest potential.
  • Healing is the return of the integrity and wholeness of a person
  • Health promotion is activities and preventive measures to increase well-being and actualize the human potential.

Requirements of the Minor:

The minor in Holistic Health and Wellness consists of 16 credit hours and is based in the Nursing department at Purdue University Northwest.

Students will select a total of nine elective credit hours to fulfill the requirements of the minor. Elective courses enable the student to expand and build upon knowledge acquired in the core courses. Selection of electives permits the student to personalize the minor in a way that may be most helpful in a chosen field. Acceptance of elective courses for credit toward the minor will be reviewed by the PNW Nursing department.
