About the Program


A major in Foreign Language fosters a deep understanding of other cultures, languages, and literatures. It prepares students to play an active role in today’s globalizing world. Students in this major learn new languages, explore fascinating cultures, and come to know other societies firsthand through study abroad programs. They gain linguistic skills and cultural sensitivity that make them highly competitive in the global marketplace.

  • 126 Credit Hours
  • Minimum grade of B- required for COM 11400; C required for ENGL 10400 and all French courses
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0 required for graduation
  • Certain courses may only be available at one campus location

Students must take nine (9) courses to fulfill this requirement including the following five (5) courses, two (2) French Literature courses, one (1) French Culture course, and one (1) French Civilization course.

Minimum Grade and Grade Point Average (GPA):  Minimum grade of B- required for COM 11400; C required for ENGL 10400 and all French courses; 2.0 GPA

Note 1: Aesthetics – Choose1 course from: AD 25500, MUS 25000, ENGL 31900, ENGL 28600, COM 34300, or THTR 20100.

Note 2: Admission to Gate 2 courses (EDCI 35500) requires application screening by the Department of Teacher Preparation advisor. Courses marked with (f) required field observations. Students may not receive more than 2 C’s in professional education courses.

Note 3: French Requirement – Must take 11 courses from the following:

  • FR 26100 (H), 36500 (H), 46100 (H), 46500 (H), and 51100 (H)
  • Two French Literature FR 40500 (H) and 40600 (H) (or 39000 (H) or 49000 (H))
  • One course in French Culture - FR 58100 (H)
  • One course in French Civilization - FR 45000 (H)
  • Two French Electives – Choose two from: FR 30700 (H), FR 39000 (H), FR 49000 (H), or FR 51500 (H)

Note 4: Admission to Gate 3 and beyond requires Admission to Teacher Preparation program and passing of state licensure exams.
