About the Program


This associate degree program prepares students for careers as paramedics offering out-of-hospital acute care. The program has two components and requires at least 3 years for completion. The academic phase of the program occurs at the Purdue University Northwest and includes course work in the basic sciences and general studies. The clinical professional phase of the program is offered at an affiliated hospital (St. Anthony Medical Center, Crown Point, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Hobart or Methodist Hospitals, Inc., Gary, Indiana) approved to offer the paramedic curriculum. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training and certification must be completed prior to applying for the clinical phase

This Associate Degree is awarded to those students who successfully complete both 32 credit hours of coursework at Purdue Northwest and 28 credit hours during the 18 month Clinical Phase at one of the following affiliated hospitals. (St Anthony Medical Center, Crown Point, St Mary’s Medical Center, Hobart or Methodist Hospitals, Inc, Gary, Indiana are approved to offer the paramedic curriculum.)

Note 1: Psychology Elective – The following courses are recommended: PSY 35000 Abnormal Psychology, PSY 35500 Child Abuse and Neglect, PSY 36100 Human Development I: Infancy and Childhood, PSY 42800 Drugs and Behavior, PSY 44300 Theories of Human Development, PSY 53200 Psychology Disorders of Childhood, or PSY 53500 Psychology of Death and Dying.

The two semester plan of study is a recommended sequence of classes designed to show how the coursework at Purdue Northwest can be completed within one year. For example, students starting in Fall 2017 must complete a minimum of 16 credit hours per semester / 32 credit hours per academic year to complete the 32 credit hours coursework by May 2018.
