EDCI 23000 - Academic Language In Education

Credit Hours: 3.00. This course addresses the academic language needed by teachers in school settings. It focuses on the use of discipline-specific vocabulary, grammar and punctuation, and applications of rhetorical conventions and devices that are typical for a content area (e.g., essays, written and oral presentations, discussions of issues) and how they are taught in schools. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Use the academic language needed by teachers in schools, i.e. the use of discipline-specific vocabulary, grammar and punctuation, and applications of rhetorical conventions and devices that are typical for a content area (e.g., essays, reading and writing workshop, written and oral presentations, etc.).
2. Teach characteristics and components of effective speaking and strategies for communicating effectively in large and small groups.
3. Use the major forms and functions of writing and methods of discovering, developing, and shaping ideas for writing; drafting, revising, editing and proofreading written texts; and publishing texts using various technologies including the Internet.
4. Apply and utilize state and national standards and resources for English Language Arts in their teaching of K-6 children.
