EDCI 37401 - Science And Math In Kindergarten And Primary Grades


Credit Hours: 4.00. Explores methods and materials for inquiry in the content areas of science including physical, life, earth and space. Explores methods and materials for fostering conceptual development in the areas of mathematics including number, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability, and algebraic reasoning. Focus on the process of inquiry and problem-solving to construct knowledge. Typically offered Fall.
Prerequisite(s): EDCI 37100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- AND EDCI 37300 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C (MAY BE TAKEN CONCURRENTLY)
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Explore developmentally appropriate methods and materials for teaching elementary/primary children the concepts in mathematics and science. (NAEYC #5)
2. Articulate the importance of addressing children’s cognitive development through an integrated approach in a natural and meaningful way. (NAEYC #4)
3. Demonstrate an understanding that individual children display differences in development, temperament, cultural background, and experience that will influence children’s conceptual development. (NAEYC #1)
4. Examine and analyze materials, methods, and environments for creating experiences in mathematics and science in an elementary/primary classroom. (NAEYC #5)
5. Develop plans, activities and assessments for cognitive experiences based on state and national standards. (NAEYC #3)
6. Encourage and model the skills of scientific inquiry as well as curiosity, openness to new ideas and data, and skepticism that characterize science. (NAEYC #4)
