EDCI 37301 - Expressive Arts/Social Studies In Kindergarten And Primary Grades Credit Hours: 4.00. Explores the concepts and modes of inquiry from the social studies including history, geography, social sciences and related areas to foster kindergarten and primary children’s understanding. Focus on the integration of curriculum including the arts as a means of communication and inquiry. Examines methods and materials for presenting the content. Typically offered Fall. Prerequisite(s): EDCI 37100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- AND EDCI 37400 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C (MAY BE TAKEN CONCURRENTLY) Course Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the concepts of social studies and how they are connected. (NAEYC #5)
2. Explore social studies as a context to promote children’s abilities to make informed decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse society. (NAEYC #5)
3. Understand and use the expressive arts as a means for integrating, assessing and teaching children’s social studies experiences. (NAEYC #5)
4. Understand and evaluate the importance of play as integral to children’s development in all domains (social, emotional, physical and cognitive); (NAEYC #4)
5. Use developmentally appropriate practices for assessing children’s prior knowledge to create meaningful and engaging social studies learning opportunities. (NAEYC #4)
6. Describe the integration of children’s physical development in curriculum planning in early childhood classrooms. (NAEYC #4)
7. Examine and analyze materials, methods, and environments for creating social studies learning opportunities that incorporate experiences in art, music, movement, drama and physical education in an elementary/primary classroom; (NAEYC #5)
8. Develop plans, activities and assessments for social studies experiences based on state and national standards. (NAEYC #3)
