EDCI 36500 - Science In The Elementary School

Credit Hours: 3.00. Investigates ways children learn science as a basis for planning, enacting, and assessing science curriculum and instruction. State and national standards, teaching cases, and science lab experiences are used as tools for reflecting on practice. Includes a field-based experiential component. Taken concurrently with EDCI 36400.

Prerequisite(s): EDCI 36201 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Explore the instruction of elementary science through pedagogically appropriate methods. Lesson design will follow the learning cycle (5 E format) and lessons will be designed in a discovery/inquiry fashion using hands-on instruction.
2. Study in-depth teacher/student and student/student interactions in the classroom and to better understand how knowledge of children can inform the teaching-learning process, especially in science instruction.
3. Explore planning processes in several subject areas to learn to integrate science into other curricular areas, as well as developing both weekly and daily lesson plans.
4. Examine the nature of teaching and teacher growth through reflection.
5. Demonstrate through the planning and teaching of lessons, that you possess the subject matter knowledge necessary to provide quality educational experiences for children in grades K-
6.
6. Examine management routines, teacher rationale for those routines, procedures, and management in the classroom.
7. Examine methods of evaluation, including anecdotal records, alternative assessments, performance assessments, general record keeping, and grading.
8. Examine the school as a community of diverse learners.
9. Examine your philosophy of education throughout this field experience.
